Highlights

  • Three Kalash valleys: Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir, each progressively quieter
  • The Kalasha Dur museum and the traditional jestakhan clan temples
  • Chitral Fort and the Shahi Masjid
  • Garam Chashma hot springs, with views toward Tirich Mir, highest peak of the Hindu Kush
  • Optional festival departures: Chilam Joshi in spring, Chaumos in midwinter

About

The Kalash are the only non-Muslim indigenous community in the region, with their own language, polytheistic religion and calendar of festivals. This is a genuinely distinct story from the Karakoram trips rather than a variation on them.

The physical demands are low: day walks between villages, hotels and village guesthouses throughout, and no camping at all.

Please note. Photographing people, particularly women, requires explicit permission, and some ritual spaces are closed to visitors entirely. Chitral flights cancel often in poor weather, so the Lowari road is our fallback. Festival dates are set locally each year and are confirmed only shortly beforehand.
